Workshop Description:
Drawing from life is a foundational practice in the classical tradition, and the portrait is its crowning capstone. Capturing someone’s likeness in a portrait involves more than high-grade materials and excellent technique, it involves drawing with feeling; for the observer to feel passion worked into the paper.
In this two-session workshop, instructor Seth Fite will teach classical drawing techniques used by the Old Masters. Fite will lead the class in methods of direct observation, discussion of successful portraiture from history, and demonstration drawing from a live in-studio model. Students will learn basic facial anatomy and proportion as well as elements of composition and narrative. Fite will lead the class by giving demonstrations, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and encouraging participation in his philosophy of drawing. Every task will involve direct observation from a model, with demonstrations using graphite and charcoal mediums.
